About this coinHistory

The 1910 Proof Indian Head Eagle carries a reported delivery of 204 coins, the highest figure recorded for any year of the proof series and the final issue struck against the 46-star edge collar that had appeared on the denomination since 1907. New Mexico and Arizona statehood in 1912 prompted the Mint to retool the edge to 48 stars, leaving the 1910 proof as the closing date for the original collar variant within the proof run. Production at Philadelphia continued the satin or Roman Finish treatment that had been reintroduced in 1909 after the unfavorable reception of the 1908 sandblast experiment, and the 1910 delivery sits at the peak of a three-year cluster bounded by 74 pieces in 1909 and 95 in 1911.

Surface character on certified examples shows the soft luminous gold typical of the Roman Finish, with warm yellow color across the fields and a low-sheen satin texture over the central devices that distinguishes the finish from both the brilliant mirror proofs of the prior century and the granular sandblast strikes of 1908. Authentication centers on color and texture rather than reflectivity, and PCGS and NGC certify only the satin variant for the date. Combined certified populations across both services run into the low triple digits with most events concentrated in the PR63 to PR65 range and a thinner cohort in gem and superb gem tiers, consistent with survival estimates of roughly 120 to 150 coins drawn from the original 204.

Market activity is steady relative to the rarer finish variants of 1908 and 1909, and the 1910 is generally regarded as the most accessible date for collectors building a proof type set within the series. Heritage and Stack's Bowers have moved gem and superb gem examples in recent cycles, and a Legend Rare Coin Auctions sale in April 2021 set the public record at $376,000 for a PR67+ specimen. Lower-grade certified pieces in PR63 and PR64 trade in the high five-figure range, with results climbing into six figures at PR66 and above. The Mint appears to have over-produced the 1910 delivery against demand that did not materialize at the higher level.
