About this coinHistory

The 1911 proof eagle is the final Indian Head ten dollar issue struck on the 46-star edge collar that defined the type from its 1907 inception, with two stars added in 1912 to reflect the admission of New Mexico and Arizona. Reported mintage falls to 95 pieces from the 204 distributed for 1910, the steepest single-year contraction in the proof series and a clear signal of waning public reception for the matte gold proofs. Philadelphia worked from carefully prepared dies on a medal press, then sandblasted the finished coins to produce the dark, granular surface that John Dannreuther and the major grading services document for the date, ending the brief 1909 to 1910 satin Roman experiment and returning to the texture first applied in late 1908. Survival estimates run between 60 and 80 examples across all grades.

The sandblast finish on a preserved 1911 reads as an even, microscopically pebbled field with subdued olive to khaki gold coloration, absorbing rather than reflecting incident light. Authentication centers on that uniform texture, full proof rim squareness, and the 46-star collar imprint along the edge. PCGS and NGC report combined certification populations in the low double digits, weighted toward PR64 and PR65 with thinning representation at PR66 and a small handful at PR67. The unfavorable contemporary reception of the matte proofs left many original owners disappointed, and surfaces are easily disturbed by handling, so most census events sit in the choice gem range rather than at the top.

Auction activity reflects both absolute rarity and the date's standing as the last 46-star edge proof. A PR67 PCGS example with CAC approval realized $192,000 at Heritage, and the Forsythe Collection PR67 offered through Legend was reported as bested by only one other certified example. Choice and gem trades through Heritage and Stack's Bowers cluster in the high five and low six-figure ranges, and a meaningful trading window may produce only a few opportunities across an entire collecting decade. The 1911 sits within the late proof cluster bounded by 1910 at 204 and 1912 at 83, a tight three-year arc that brackets the design's edge transition. For the broader arc of Saint-Gaudens' design through the With Motto reverse and the proof program that ran through 1915, see the Indian Head Eagle series history.
