Dahlonega produced only 1,566 gold dollars in 1860, one of the lowest regular mintages in the entire gold dollar series. The Georgia mint was in its twilight. Bullion receipts had dwindled, political tensions between Georgia and the federal government were mounting, and the small mountain facility was increasingly operating on institutional momentum with no clear future. The 1,566-coin production run barely justified the cost of setting up the dies and running the press.
The 1860-D is one of the rarest Dahlonega gold dollars. PCGS estimates roughly 25 to 40 survive across all grades, with most in the Fine to Very Fine range. Coins above Extremely Fine are very rare, and genuine Uncirculated examples are counted individually. An NGC MS61 sold for $29,375 at Heritage in August 2010. The coin draws intense bidding from Dahlonega specialists whenever an example appears at auction.
The 1860-D's rarity is comparable to the 1856-D, and both rank among the most challenging dates in the gold dollar series. The olive-toned surfaces, soft strikes, and slightly rough planchet quality that characterize Dahlonega production are prominent on surviving examples. Authentication is critical at these price levels.
Dahlonega would strike gold dollars one final time in 1861, under circumstances that make the 1861-D one of the most historically significant coins in American numismatics. The 1860-D, struck during the last full year of normal federal operations at the mint, represents the penultimate chapter of Dahlonega gold dollar coinage.
