About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 13,000 gold dollars in 1860. The denomination remained a minor part of the facility's output, dwarfed by the double eagles and eagles that absorbed most of the California gold flowing through the mint. The "S" mintmark appears on the reverse below the wreath.

The 1860-S is scarce, with PCGS estimating roughly 75 to 125 survivors across all grades. Most grade between Fine and Extremely Fine. Uncirculated coins are difficult to find, and gems are rare. The coin carries the appeal of San Francisco gold from the pre-Civil War era, a period when the California mint was still a relatively young operation processing the output of the world's most famous gold rush.
