About this coinHistory

Philadelphia delivered 5,950 gold dollars in 1864, continuing the low production pattern that had begun the previous year. The Civil War was in its third full year. General Grant was grinding through the Overland Campaign in Virginia, and Sherman was marching toward Atlanta. Gold traded at a substantial premium over greenbacks, reaching $2.85 in paper money for one gold dollar at the height of the war. The gold dollar's face value and its market value had diverged completely.

The 1864 is scarce, with PCGS estimating roughly 75 to 100 survivors across all grades. Circulated examples in Fine to Extremely Fine are the most commonly encountered. Uncirculated coins are uncommon, and any example with original surfaces and clean fields commands a premium. The 1864 sits in the middle of the Civil War low-mintage run and requires active searching from collectors working through the series date by date.
