About this coinHistory

Mint records show 3,725 gold dollars delivered in 1865, a further decline from the already-low production of 1864. The war ended at Appomattox in April, and Lincoln was assassinated five days later, but the gold dollar's production remained depressed. The premium on gold over greenbacks persisted well after the war's end, keeping gold coins out of domestic circulation and limiting demand for new production to financial and export applications.

The 1865 is one of the scarcer Civil War-era gold dollars. PCGS estimates roughly 50 to 75 survive across all grades. Most grade between Fine and Extremely Fine. Uncirculated examples are rare enough to draw competitive bidding at auction. The 1865 marks the low point of annual gold dollar production during the Civil War period, and collectors building date sets face it as one of the more difficult 1860s acquisitions.
