About this coinHistory

Philadelphia produced 7,130 gold dollars in 1866, the first post-war year. Reconstruction had begun, but the monetary effects of the war persisted. Gold coins still traded at a premium over paper currency, and the gold dollar remained absent from everyday commerce. The 7,130-coin mintage was a slight increase from 1865's 3,725 but remained firmly in the low-production range that defined the denomination from 1863 onward.

The 1866 is scarce, with an estimated 75 to 125 survivors across all grades. Circulated examples in Fine to Extremely Fine are the typical encounter. Uncirculated coins are uncommon, and gems with full luster are rare. The post-war gold dollars from 1866 through the early 1870s occupy an unusual numismatic niche: produced by the hundreds or thousands, preserved by the dozens, and collected by specialists who appreciate the denomination's persistence through a period when it served no practical domestic purpose.
