About this coinHistory

5,250 gold dollars left the Philadelphia Mint in 1867. The gold premium over paper currency continued, and the denomination remained a financial instrument for customs duties and international settlements. Secretary of State Seward completed the purchase of Alaska from Russia that March for $7.2 million in gold, a transaction that highlighted the ongoing importance of gold in government finance even as ordinary Americans used greenbacks for their daily business.

PCGS estimates roughly 50 to 75 survive across all grades. The typical example grades Fine to Extremely Fine. Uncirculated coins are scarce, and finding one with clean surfaces requires patience. The 1867 is one of many consecutive low-mintage dates in the series from this period, each similar in rarity and each requiring the same active searching from collectors.
