The 1865 proof gold dollar was struck during the war's final months. An estimated 25 proofs were produced, one of the lowest proof figures in the Type 3 series. The business strike mintage of 3,725 was similarly small, making 1865 one of the scarcest overall years for gold dollars in any format. The war ended in April, Lincoln was assassinated, and the country began the long process of rebuilding, but the gold dollar's proof production captured a moment of transition.
Surviving 1865 proof gold dollars are rare. The low estimated mintage ensures that each appearance at auction is noteworthy, and examples in PR64 or better command strong prices. The proof represents the Type 3 design during its most constrained production period.
