The 1866 proof gold dollar was produced in an estimated mintage of 30 coins. The first full year of Reconstruction brought no relief to the gold dollar's suppressed production levels. Proof collectors continued to place orders through the Mint, and the small annual runs of proofs ensured that at least some high-quality examples of each year's coinage would survive for future generations.
The 1866 proof is scarce. Surviving examples are scattered across institutional and private collections, and auction appearances are intermittent. Well-preserved proofs with original surfaces and good eye appeal carry premiums that reflect both the coin's rarity and the difficulty of locating problem-free examples from this era.
