About this coinHistory

Philadelphia delivered 3,245 gold dollars in 1876, the nation's centennial year. The Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition drew millions of visitors, and commemorative medals were produced in quantity, but the gold dollar's production remained minimal. The Resumption Act of January 1875 had set January 1, 1879, as the date for returning to the gold standard, but gold coins still traded at a premium over greenbacks in 1876.

The 1876 is scarce, with an estimated 50 to 75 survivors across all grades. Most grade between Fine and Extremely Fine. Uncirculated examples are uncommon. The coin carried centennial-year significance that makes it appealing to collectors interested in American history, though the Mint produced no special centennial coinage at the gold dollar level.
