About this coinHistory

Mintage for 1877 was 3,920 gold dollars. The Great Railroad Strike erupted that summer, the first major nationwide labor action in American history, paralyzing rail traffic across the country. The gold dollar, still trading above face value in paper money, was untouched by the industrial unrest. The coin continued to serve as a unit for financial transactions and Treasury operations while the country struggled through the long depression that had begun with the Panic of 1873.

PCGS estimates roughly 50 to 75 survive across all grades. Circulated examples in Fine to Extremely Fine are the typical encounter. Uncirculated coins are uncommon. The 1877 is one of many consecutive scarce dates from the mid-to-late 1870s, each produced in small quantity and each requiring patience to locate.
