About this coinHistory

Mintage for 1880 was 1,636 gold dollars, one of the lowest in the series. The figure is surprising given that specie payments had just resumed. Demand for gold dollars simply did not exist in meaningful quantity. The denomination was too small to handle conveniently, and paper currency filled the role that gold dollars had originally been designed to play. The Mint struck just enough to maintain the series and satisfy proof-set collectors.

The 1880 is genuinely scarce. PCGS estimates roughly 30 to 50 survive across all grades. The low mintage makes this one of the toughest non-proof dates in the series, exceeded in rarity among regular Philadelphia issues only by the 1875. Circulated examples in Fine to Extremely Fine are difficult to locate, and Uncirculated coins are rare. The 1880 demands active searching and is one of the dates that separates casual collectors from dedicated gold dollar specialists.
