About this coinHistory

Philadelphia delivered 7,707 gold dollars in 1881, a notable increase from the 1,636-coin low of 1880. The uptick may reflect a small recovery in demand or simply a larger batch processed from accumulated bullion deposits. President James Garfield was shot in July 1881 and died in September, but the Mint's production schedule operated independently of the political crisis.

The 1881 is modestly scarce but more available than the extreme lows of 1878-1880. PCGS estimates roughly 100 to 150 survive across all grades. Circulated examples in Fine through AU can be found with patience. Uncirculated coins are uncommon but appear at auction periodically.
