About this coinHistory

5,125 gold dollars were struck in 1882. The denomination had settled into its final production pattern: small annual mintages, primarily serving the collector market and minimal financial demand. The gold dollar was increasingly an anachronism, a denomination whose practical utility had ended with the Civil War but whose legal-tender status kept it in production.

PCGS estimates roughly 75 to 100 survive across all grades. Most grade between Fine and AU. Uncirculated coins are uncommon. The 1882 is one of many similarly scarce dates from the 1880s, each produced in modest quantity and each available with patient searching but not casual browsing.
