Philadelphia produced 11,007 gold dollars in 1883, one of the higher figures from the 1880s. The Brooklyn Bridge opened that May, and the gold dollar's 15-millimeter diameter was smaller than many of the rivets holding the bridge together. The denomination was a relic of the 1849 Gold Rush, still being manufactured three decades later for reasons that had more to do with institutional habit than commercial necessity.
The 1883 is modestly available by late-series standards. PCGS estimates roughly 125 to 175 survive across all grades. Circulated examples are the typical encounter, and Uncirculated coins can be located with reasonable effort. The date's higher mintage makes it one of the more accessible 1880s gold dollars for collectors.
