About this coinHistory

Mintage for 1884 was 6,236 gold dollars. The denomination continued its quiet late-series production at the Philadelphia Mint, stamping out a few thousand coins per year for a market that consisted primarily of collectors and a thin residual financial demand. The Mint continued to produce gold dollars because Congress had not discontinued them, and the small annual runs cost little to maintain.

The 1884 is modestly scarce. PCGS estimates roughly 75 to 100 survive across all grades. Circulated examples in Fine through AU are available with searching. Uncirculated coins are uncommon. The date falls in the middle range of 1880s gold dollar rarity, neither the most available nor the most difficult year in the final decade of production.
