Philadelphia delivered 12,261 gold dollars in 1885. Grant died that July, and the nation mourned a president who had held office during the gold dollar's most tumultuous period. The denomination had been stripped of its circulating function during Grant's administration, and it never recovered. The 12,261-coin mintage was respectable by late-series standards, placing 1885 among the higher-production years of the 1880s.
The 1885 is one of the more available late-series dates. PCGS estimates roughly 125 to 175 survive across all grades. Circulated examples can be found without great difficulty, and Uncirculated coins appear at auction with reasonable frequency.
