About this coinHistory

6,016 gold dollars were struck in 1886. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York Harbor that October, a gift from France celebrating ideals that the tiny gold dollar, bearing its own image of Liberty, had carried since 1856. The denomination was nearing the end of its run. Congress would discontinue the gold dollar in 1889, and the 1886 output of 6,016 coins placed it among the lower production years of the final decade.

PCGS estimates roughly 75 to 100 survive across all grades. Most grade Fine to AU. Uncirculated coins are uncommon. The 1886 is modestly scarce and requires patient searching from collectors building complete late-series sets.
