About this coinHistory

Philadelphia delivered 8,543 gold dollars in 1887. The denomination had three years remaining. Congress had shown no interest in renewing or expanding the gold dollar's role, and the coins being produced in the late 1880s served no commercial purpose that paper currency and silver coins could not fill. The Mint struck them because it could, and because a small market of collectors and financial users absorbed the output.

The 1887 is modestly available. PCGS estimates roughly 100 to 150 survive across all grades. Circulated and Uncirculated examples can both be found with patience. The date falls in the accessible range of late-series gold dollars, offering no unusual difficulty for collectors working through the final years.
