The 1872-CC Liberty Head eagle is the third Carson City issue in the With Motto subtype and one of the keys of the entire CC eagle run. A reported delivery of just 4,600 coins gave the date almost no margin for survival, and Doug Winter estimates only 65 to 75 pieces exist today across every grade. Following the better-known 1870-CC and 1871-CC, this coin closes out the trio of pre-bonanza Carson City tens that defined the mint's earliest, leanest production years before larger silver and gold deliveries took hold mid-decade.
Survivors run hard, the great majority grade VF to low EF, with many showing the rim bruises and old cleanings typical of long circulation in a frontier economy. Winter believes fewer than ten true About Uncirculated examples are known, most clustered at AU50 to AU53, and a Mint State coin is essentially uncollectible in any normal sense. Strike weakness on Liberty's hair curls is a hallmark of the issue and should not be confused with wear when grading; the dies were used hard and high points routinely come up soft. Authentication on a coin this scarce demands real care. Confirm the standard 16.718-gram weight and a specific gravity near 17.2 to rule out gold-plated counterfeits, and inspect the CC mintmark for tooling marks, solder halos, or a subtle mismatch in surface texture against the surrounding reverse field, added-mintmark fakes built on common-date Philadelphia 1872 eagles are the textbook deception for this date. A genuine CC punch sits low and slightly right of the eagle's tail feathers and shares the granular field finish of the host coin.
Demand for early Carson City gold continues to outrun supply, and the 1872-CC sits firmly among the dates Winter ranks at the top of the series. The market high water mark is the NGC MS62 example sold by Heritage at the 2020 Winter FUN auction for $240,000, described by Winter as the all-time record for any Carson City eagle. Even problem-free EF coins routinely trade in the mid five figures, and an honest AU is a marquee acquisition for any CC date set.
