The 1872-S Liberty Head Eagle is the nineteenth annual issue struck at the San Francisco branch and one of the more condition-restricted With Motto deliveries of the early 1870s. Production stopped at just 17,300 pieces, a figure that places this date among the lowest-output San Francisco eagles of the post-motto period and well below the larger double eagle commitments that dominated the western mint's bullion priorities that year. Survival follows the pattern of its 1870-S and 1871-S neighbors: most known coins fall in mid-circulated grades, with essentially nothing reported above the lowest Mint State tier.

PCGS estimates roughly 75 to 150 survivors across all grades, and certified populations confirm the squeeze at the top: PCGS has graded nothing higher than MS62 (only four at that level), while NGC's finest is a single MS63 and a single MS64. Doug Winter has described the issue as well-struck with attractive original luster but plagued by surface marks, which makes problem-free examples disproportionately scarce relative to raw population counts. Authentication starts with the standard physical envelope, 16.718 grams struck weight (allow plus or minus 0.05g for circulated wear), 27 mm diameter, and specific gravity near 17.2 for the 90 percent gold, 10 percent copper alloy. The S mintmark sits below the eagle on the reverse and should be examined under magnification for the soft, hand-punched serifs typical of the period; sharp mechanical edges, tooling around the field, or a host-coin date inconsistent with the 1872 logotype point to an added-mintmark fabrication grafted onto a Philadelphia donor.

Across the With Motto San Francisco run, the 1872-S sits in the same condition-rarity tier as the 1870-S and 1871-S but is meaningfully harder to locate genuinely choice. Typical retail trade in Very Fine reaches the high four-figure range, with Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated coins climbing into the mid-five figures when surfaces are clean and luster intact. As a benchmark, a CAC-approved 1876-S in AU58 brought $70,500 at recent auction, illustrating what fresh, original eye appeal commands among the scarcer With Motto S-mints of the decade. Patience for a properly graded coin with undisturbed surfaces pays a long dividend over chasing the first available holder.
