Doug Winter dismissed both 1900 issues as "kind of nondescript," even nudging year-set builders toward the San Francisco coin, and that frank assessment captures the date's place in the series: a workhorse Philadelphia striking that survived in unusual abundance because so many shipped overseas as gold backing for international settlements before the 1933 recall ever loomed.

The story today is largely a story of European repatriation. Thousands of Mint State examples have been certified, and most of those coins re-entered the American market through Swiss and French bank releases in the latter half of the 20th century. Strikes are typically sharp, with strong central detail on Liberty's hair and the eagle's plumage, though scattered abrasions from bag handling are routine through MS63. Choice and Gem coins are obtainable with patience, LCR Coin offered a fresh NGC MS65+ specimen at $5,400, a fair benchmark for the grade, but MS66 is where the date turns genuinely scarce, and PCGS has never certified a single MS67 in more than three decades of grading. As a Regular issue with no recognized varieties, authentication is straightforward: a 16.718-gram weight check confirms the standard alloy, and the date should display clean, evenly-spaced numerals without the tooled serifs that flag altered-date counterfeits sometimes seen on scarcer dates in the series.

For collectors, the 1900 functions as one of the easier With Motto type representatives, a coin that delivers a sharply-struck Coronet design and just under half an ounce of gold without commanding a meaningful premium over melt in lower Mint State. Date-and-mintmark builders treat it as a check-the-box entry; type collectors gravitate toward it because Gem certified examples remain priced within reach.
