About this coinHistory

The 1900-S Liberty Head eagle stands out in the turn-of-the-century San Francisco run for the simple reason that almost nothing else in the period looks like it. While the contemporary 1900 Philadelphia issue rolled off the presses by the hundreds of thousands and now circulates freely in Mint State, the 1900-S delivery was held to just 81,000 coins, a figure that places it among the lower San Francisco mintages of the entire With Motto subtype. Doug Winter has flagged it as one of his published Pacific Coast eagle sleepers, recommending it over the Philadelphia issue for year-set collectors and noting that it has long traded at modest premiums to its true scarcity.

Survival is correspondingly thin. PCGS estimates roughly 100 to 200 examples extant across all grades, and the recent Fairmont Collection releases, which have reshaped supply for many late-19th-century San Francisco eagles, added relatively few 1900-S coins to the certified pool. Most encountered pieces grade in the AU range with original Pacific Coast color; problem-free Mint State coins are genuinely scarce and become condition rarities at MS62 and finer. For authentication, the 16.718-gram weight standard is the first checkpoint, with a specific gravity near 17.2 confirming the 90% gold alloy on borderline pieces. The S mintmark sits below the eagle in the reverse exergue between the arrow feathers and the denomination; on genuine die-struck examples it should show crisp upper and lower serifs and a clean interior loop, since added-mintmark deceptions made from Philadelphia hosts typically betray themselves with a soft outline or a faint tooling halo around the punch.

Within a date-and-mintmark set, the 1900-S rewards patience: pricing tracks gold-content levels in circulated grades but steps up sharply once a properly graded uncirculated coin enters the conversation, and recent Heritage and Stack's Bowers session results show widening spreads between AU58 and MS61 examples. For collectors content with a sharp About Uncirculated, opportunities surface a few times a year; for a true Mint State coin, expect a longer hunt. For broader context on the With Motto subtype and the major rarities that bracket this date, see the Liberty Head Eagle series history.
