About this coinHistory

San Francisco's 796,000 double eagles of 1916 stand as the final Saint-Gaudens production before a three-year national hiatus in 20-dollar gold coinage. No double eagles were struck at any mint in 1917, 1918, or 1919, and the denomination did not resume until Philadelphia's 1920 production. The 1916-S is therefore the historical bookend of the pre-hiatus Saint-Gaudens era, with production shifts beginning in 1917 that redirected mint capacity and gold reserves away from $20 coinage for the following three years. The S mint mark appears above the date on the obverse. Design specifications are unchanged from 1915-S: low-relief striding Liberty with 48 stars on the obverse, eagle-and-sun reverse with IN GOD WE TRUST above the sun, and lettered E PLURIBUS UNUM edge. 1916-S was the only double eagle struck across all three U.S. mints that year.

Strike quality on 1916-S follows San Francisco's consistent Motto-era pattern: clean central detail on Liberty and the eagle, crisp separation on the eagle's primary feathers, and good 48-star definition on early-state examples. Wear on circulated pieces follows the series pattern, with Liberty's forward knee and breast and the eagle's breast and leading wing first to show friction. Grade distribution for the issue is weighted toward AU and Mint State grades up through MS64, with European hoard returns having supplied meaningful Mint State survival for this date. MS65 and finer examples are available in reasonable numbers, and MS66 is a distinct step up in scarcity and pricing. Counterfeit exposure is semi-key baseline, elevated by the date's collector demand as the last pre-hiatus issue; PCGS or NGC certification is the standard acquisition path, and CAC approval adds meaningful value at MS64 and higher.

Market position for 1916-S sits as a solid semi-key, supported both by the moderate mintage and by the coin's historic status as the last pre-hiatus Saint-Gaudens double eagle. Pricing at all grade levels sits at a meaningful step above common-date issues, with circulated examples trading in the mid to high four figures and Mint State coins clearing five figures at MS65 and above. MS66 and higher carry registry-set premiums and have traded well into five figures in recent years. Collector demand comes from both date-and-mint set builders, who must acquire an example for completion, and from type-set collectors interested in the end-of-pre-hiatus bookend piece. Acquisition is certified only; the counterfeit exposure and the grading-sensitivity at MS64-MS66 both warrant third-party confirmation. For the broader context of the 1917-1919 production gap and the series' wartime interruption, see the St. Gaudens Gold $20 Double Eagles history article.
