About this coinHistory

Philadelphia's 228,250 pieces dated 1920 reopened Saint-Gaudens double eagle production after the three-year national pause that followed the 1916-S. The parent mint had not struck double eagles since 1915, and the 1920 output marks the restart of continuous Saint-Gaudens coinage that would run through 1933. Denver did not participate in the 1920 resumption, and the denomination was coined only at Philadelphia and San Francisco (558,000 pieces) that year. No mint mark appears because Philadelphia coins of the series carry none. Design specifications are unchanged from the pre-hiatus issues: low-relief striding Liberty with 48 stars on the obverse, eagle-and-sun reverse with IN GOD WE TRUST above the sun, and lettered E PLURIBUS UNUM edge. The Matte Proof program had ended with 1915 and was not revived for 1920 or any subsequent year.

Strike quality on 1920 Philadelphia is typical for the parent mint's post-hiatus production: adequate central detail on Liberty and the eagle with some variance across die pairs. Late-state strikes can show softness in the 48-star obverse, particularly in the lower arc where die wear concentrated. Wear on circulated examples follows the series pattern, with Liberty's forward knee and breast and the eagle's breast and leading wing first to show friction. Grade distribution favors AU and lower Mint State grades; MS65 and finer examples are genuinely scarce relative to the mintage. The 1920 P is among the dates more commonly found in European bank hoard returns than earlier semi-key Philadelphia issues, which supports Mint State availability better than the mintage alone would suggest but still leaves MS66 and above as condition-rarity territory. Counterfeit exposure is elevated for 1920 given its semi-key pricing; PCGS or NGC certification is the standard acquisition safeguard, and CAC approval adds meaningful value at MS64 and higher.

Market position for 1920 Philadelphia sits in the semi-key tier of the series, supported by the modest post-hiatus mintage and by the coin's distinct position as the first parent-mint Saint-Gaudens double eagle after the 1917-1919 gap. Pricing through MS63 sits at a step above common-date Saint-Gaudens in equivalent grade, with the premium widening through MS64 and into five-figure territory at MS65 and above. European hoard survival moderates the premium somewhat at common Mint State grades compared to the pre-hiatus 1914 and 1915 Philadelphia issues, but the 1920 is not a common date and pricing reflects that. For date-and-mint set builders, the 1920 is a required acquisition, usually handled at MS63 or MS64 where availability and pricing converge. Acquisition is certified only; raw coins at semi-key pricing carry unnecessary counterfeit exposure. For the broader context of the 1917-1919 production gap and the series resumption in 1920, see the St. Gaudens Gold $20 Double Eagles history article.
