About this coinHistory

Survival of the 1920-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle bears no meaningful relationship to its 558,000 mintage, one of the more misleading production figures in U.S. coinage. Despite the seemingly ample production, surviving examples number somewhere between 100 and 200 coins across all grades, a survival rate on the order of one coin in every three to five thousand struck. The explanation lies in the coin's pattern of distribution. Most of the 1920-S output remained in federal gold reserves or domestic bank vaults and was melted during and after the 1933 recall. Only a small fraction reached European bank storage, where other same-era dates found protection from destruction. The S mint mark appears above the date on the obverse. Design specifications are unchanged from earlier Motto-era issues: low-relief striding Liberty with 48 stars, eagle-and-sun reverse with IN GOD WE TRUST above the sun, and lettered E PLURIBUS UNUM edge.

Strike quality on surviving 1920-S examples varies within the normal San Francisco Motto-era range: central detail on Liberty and the eagle typically comes up well, with some pieces showing softness in the star tips or the lower-arc detail. Wear on surviving circulated coins follows the series pattern, with Liberty's forward knee and breast and the eagle's breast feathers first to show friction. Grade distribution of the surviving population is weighted toward AU and lower Mint State grades; MS63 and higher examples are specialist-level acquisitions that rarely appear outside major auctions. MS64 and MS65 coins are significant events when offered, and MS66 examples have reached seven-figure levels at the top of the grading scale. Counterfeit exposure is material for this issue given the price environment; PCGS or NGC certification is absolutely required. Any raw 1920-S offered at a fraction of market pricing deserves immediate suspicion regardless of source.

Market position for 1920-S is that of a major key date and one of the defining rarities of the late-date Saint-Gaudens series. Pricing structure reflects the genuine scarcity: VF examples trade in the mid five figures, EF and AU coins move further into five-figure territory, and MS60 examples clear the $40,000 range at current market. MS63 enters six-figure pricing, and the climb continues sharply from there, with the finest-known examples clearing seven figures at major auctions. Collector demand comes from date-and-mint set specialists, top-tier registry collectors, and historical significance collectors who see the 1920-S as the clearest demonstration in U.S. coinage of the difference between raw mintage and surviving population. Acquisition is certified only at any grade, with CAC approval adding significant value at the five-figure price points. For the broader context of the late-date Saint-Gaudens rarities and the 1933 melt that defined this class of issues, see the St. Gaudens Gold $20 Double Eagles history article.
