Denver's 1924 double eagle production of 3,049,500 pieces ranks as the largest Denver Saint-Gaudens mintage of the entire series, modestly exceeding the following year's 1925-D run of 2,938,500 pieces. The mintage places 1924-D in peculiar territory: it has the highest D-mint production number of the series but classifies as a semi-key because nearly all of the original production was held in federal gold reserves and melted during and after the 1933 recall. European bank hoard returns were modest for this date, supplying fewer Mint State examples than a comparable high-mintage date would typically yield. Surviving population is estimated in the 8,000-10,000 range across all grades. The D mint mark sits above the date on the obverse. Design specifications are unchanged from the rest of the Motto era.

Strike quality on 1924-D varies within the normal Denver range: adequate to good central detail on Liberty and the eagle, with some examples showing softness in the torch flame or the lower-arc stars of the 48-star obverse. The strike is generally not as sharp as on the 1923-D that preceded it, reflecting heavier die-wear patterns on the large Denver production run. Wear on circulated examples follows the series pattern, with Liberty's forward knee and breast and the eagle's breast and leading wing first to show friction. Grade distribution of the surviving population is weighted toward AU through MS64; MS65 is a clear step up in scarcity, and MS66 and finer are genuine condition rarities despite the original 3-million-plus mintage. Counterfeit exposure is elevated at this semi-key pricing level; PCGS or NGC certification is the standard acquisition path. CAC approval carries meaningful value at MS64 and higher where the grading distinction moves pricing materially.

Market position for 1924-D sits firmly in the semi-key tier, supported by the melt-driven scarcity and by the condition-rarity profile at MS64 and above. Pricing in VF through AU runs in the mid to high four figures, a clear premium over common-date Saint-Gaudens in equivalent grade. MS60 through MS62 clear the $5,000-$8,000 range, MS63 crosses into five-figure territory, and MS65 and above represent specialist-level acquisitions with pricing that reflects the genuine condition scarcity. For date-and-mint set builders, 1924-D is a required acquisition that typically takes a meaningful premium budget allocation; the 1924 Philadelphia common-date companion is the cheap part of the year's set, while the 1924-D and 1924-S are the premium parts.
