San Francisco's 1924 double eagle production of 2,927,500 pieces rounded out a record-setting production year for the Saint-Gaudens series. Combined with the 4,323,000-piece 1924 Philadelphia and the 3,049,500-piece 1924-D, the calendar-year total exceeded 10.3 million coins, the highest one-year production in the series. Yet two of the three 1924 mint issues, the 1924-D and this 1924-S, carry semi-key status. The 1933 gold recall selectively destroyed branch-mint holdings while large portions of the Philadelphia production had already shipped to European central banks for reserves. The 1924-S was retained largely in federal and western bank vaults and was therefore exposed to the recall in a way that the Philadelphia issue was not. The S mint mark appears above the date on the obverse. Design specifications are unchanged from other mid-series Motto issues.
Strike quality on 1924-S is typical for San Francisco Motto-era production: adequate to sharp central detail on Liberty and the eagle, with good separation on the eagle's primary feathers. Some examples show softness in the star tips, particularly on later die-state strikes. Wear on circulated examples follows the series pattern, with Liberty's forward knee and breast and the eagle's breast and leading wing first to show friction. Grade distribution of the surviving population runs heavily through AU and lower Mint State, with MS63 and MS64 examples available but trading at clear premiums over common-date pricing. MS65 is a condition-rarity break for the issue, and MS66 and finer examples are specialist-level acquisitions with limited population-report representation. Counterfeit exposure is material at this semi-key pricing level; PCGS or NGC certification is standard, and CAC approval adds meaningful value at MS64 and finer grades.
Market position for 1924-S sits in the semi-key tier alongside its 1924-D sibling. Pricing structure runs at a clear premium over common-date Saint-Gaudens at every grade: VF through AU examples trade in the mid to high four figures, with Mint State pricing climbing sharply through MS63 and into the five-figure range at MS64 and above. MS65 and finer examples are infrequent at auction, and premium-tier pricing reflects that scarcity. For date-and-mint set builders, the 1924-S is a required acquisition typically handled at MS63 or MS64 where availability and pricing converge; paired with the 1924-D, these two branch-mint issues represent the premium-budget portion of a 1924-year set. Acquisition is certified only.
