About this coinHistory

Denver's 1925 double eagle production of 2,938,500 pieces ranks as the second-largest Denver Saint-Gaudens mintage of the series, trailing only the 1924-D by a small margin. The semi-key classification flows from the same mechanics that govern other 1920s branch-mint issues: the 1933 gold recall destroyed the vast majority of the production that remained in federal and western bank vaults, and European hoard returns for 1925-D were modest relative to the original mintage. Surviving population is estimated in the 8,000-12,000 range across all grades, a number that sounds adequate until it is weighted by grade. The D mint mark sits above the date on the obverse. Design specifications are unchanged from 1924-D: low-relief striding Liberty with 48 stars, eagle-and-sun reverse with IN GOD WE TRUST above the sun, and lettered E PLURIBUS UNUM edge.

Strike quality on 1925-D is acceptable to good, with central detail on Liberty and the eagle coming up adequately on most examples. Some coins show softness in the torch flame or in the lower-arc stars of the 48-star obverse, characteristic of Denver die-wear patterns during the high-volume mid-1920s production. Wear on circulated examples follows the series pattern, with Liberty's forward knee and breast and the eagle's breast and leading wing first to show friction. Grade distribution is where 1925-D becomes specialist territory. Circulated and lower Mint State examples are available at semi-key prices, but the population thins sharply above MS64 and collapses at MS65, where combined PCGS and NGC populations number only in the dozens. MS66 and finer is a genuine condition rarity despite the substantial original mintage. Counterfeit exposure is material given the high-grade pricing; PCGS or NGC certification is required, and CAC approval moves pricing meaningfully at MS64 and finer.

Market position for 1925-D is semi-key in the standard tiers and condition-rarity at the upper tiers. Pricing through AU runs in the mid four figures, MS60-MS62 clears into the high four to low five figures, and MS63 crosses into five-figure territory squarely. The notable feature of 1925-D pricing is the sharp jump at MS64 and the near-vertical rise at MS65, where recent auction listings have reached six figures. For date-and-mint set builders, the 1925-D is a required acquisition typically handled at MS63 or MS64; collectors targeting gem grades should understand that MS65 and above is specialist territory and infrequently offered. Acquisition is certified only at any grade, with CAC approval adding significant value at MS64 and higher. For the broader context of the 1920s Denver melt pattern and the condition rarity that affects many issues of the era, see the St. Gaudens Gold $20 Double Eagles history article.
