About this coinHistory

San Francisco's 1925 double eagle production of 3,776,500 pieces stands as the largest S-mint Saint-Gaudens mintage of the entire 26-year series. The figure is surprising for a semi-key classification, but as with the parallel 1924-S and 1925-D semi-keys, the original production bears little relationship to the surviving collector population. The 1933 gold recall melted the vast majority of 1925-S coins held in federal reserves, and European hoard returns for this date were modest, leaving an estimated 5,000 to 8,000 survivors across all grades. The S mint mark appears above the date on the obverse. Design specifications are unchanged from the 1924-S issue: low-relief striding Liberty with 48 stars, eagle-and-sun reverse with IN GOD WE TRUST above the sun, and lettered E PLURIBUS UNUM edge.

Strike quality on 1925-S is within the normal San Francisco Motto-era range: generally good central detail on Liberty and the eagle, with clean star definition on early-state examples and some softness on later die-state strikes. Wear on circulated examples follows the series pattern, with Liberty's forward knee and breast and the eagle's breast and leading wing first to show friction. Grade distribution skews heavily toward AU and lower Mint State grades, with MS63 and MS64 examples still trading at sharp premiums over common-date Saint-Gaudens in equivalent grades. The condition-rarity profile above MS64 is pronounced for this issue: MS65 populations across both major grading services number in the low dozens, and MS66 examples are specialist acquisitions that rarely appear at auction. Counterfeit exposure is material at this semi-key pricing level; PCGS or NGC certification is required, and CAC approval adds significant value at MS64 and higher.

Market position for 1925-S sits in the upper tier of the Saint-Gaudens semi-keys, with pricing that places it above the 1922-S and closer to the 1924-D and 1925-D levels. VF through AU examples trade in the mid to high four figures, with some AU-level coins commanding five-figure pricing when eye appeal is strong. MS63 pricing sits squarely in five-figure territory, MS64 routinely clears $40,000-$60,000 at public sale, and MS65 examples are rare enough that each public appearance generates serious market attention. For date-and-mint set builders, the 1925-S is a required acquisition that demands meaningful premium budget; realistic entry is at AU or MS62-MS63 where availability and pricing are more balanced. Acquisition is certified only; CAC approval is a strong tiebreaker at MS64 and higher. For the broader context of 1920s branch-mint semi-key patterns and the selective melt exposure that produced this class of rarities, see the St. Gaudens Gold $20 Double Eagles history article.
