The 1840 half cent introduced a new design by Christian Gobrecht: the Braided Hair portrait. Liberty faces left, her hair woven into a tight braid gathered at the back of the head, wearing a headband inscribed LIBERTY. The portrait is more restrained and formal than the Classic Head it replaced, reflecting the evolving neoclassical taste of the 1830s and 1840s. Gobrecht, who had already designed the Seated Liberty and the 1836 silver dollar, brought a technical precision to the half cent that earlier engravers had not achieved at this small scale.
No half cents were struck for circulation in 1840. The entire production consisted of proof specimens struck for sale to collectors. The denomination had been in limbo since the last circulation-strike Classic Heads in 1835, and the Mint saw no pressing commercial need to resume mass production. The 1840 proofs exist as a design introduction, the first appearance of the Braided Hair on the denomination, without any corresponding circulation coinage.
The "Original" designation distinguishes these coins from later restrikes produced from the same or similar dies. Original 1840 proofs were struck at or near the date they bear, using dies freshly prepared for the purpose. The restrike versions, produced years later, are identified by differences in the die characteristics or the style of the edge and planchet.
Surviving Original 1840 proof half cents are rare. Estimates of the total production vary but consistently place the number below fifty. Each surviving coin is a significant rarity and a marker of the transition from the Classic Head to the Braided Hair design. Pricing is in the high four to five figures for problem-free examples, and any offering should carry certification from a major grading service confirming both the proof status and the Original attribution.
