The 1840 Restrike proof half cent was produced years after the original 1840 proofs, using surviving 1840 dies to strike additional coins for the collector market. The practice of restriking earlier-dated coins was well established at the Philadelphia Mint by the 1850s, and the 1840 half cent was among the denominations that received this treatment. Mint officials recognized that collectors would pay for coins bearing earlier dates, and the dies were available.
Distinguishing the Restrike from the Original requires close examination of die characteristics. The restrike may show signs of die wear or repair that were not present on the original strikings, or it may be paired with a reverse die of a slightly different style. Grading services provide the attribution, and their designation on the certification holder is the standard basis for market transactions.
The 1840 Restrike is rare, though typically less so than the Original. The restrike program produced somewhat larger quantities than the original proof runs, though "larger" in this context still means populations measured in dozens. The coin is collected alongside the Original as part of a complete set of proof Braided Hair half cents, and pricing reflects its scarcity and its status as a genuine Mint product even if not a contemporary issue.
The proof-only years of the Braided Hair series, 1840 through 1848, represent a period when the half cent existed exclusively as a collector item. No one spent these coins. They were made to be preserved, and most of the survivors show the care with which their original owners treated them. Impaired examples still exist (two centuries is a long time even for a proof), but the survival rate in presentable condition is higher than for circulation-strike coins of comparable age.
