About this coinHistory

The 1849 Large Date proof half cent was struck alongside the circulation issues, continuing the proof production that had run uninterrupted since 1840. The "Large Date" designation refers to the size of the date numerals relative to the "Small Date" proof variety; the punches used for the Large Date version produced taller, bolder digits that occupy more vertical space in the date area.

Proof production for 1849 was small, consistent with the established pattern. The resumption of circulation strikes did not increase proof output; the two production streams served different audiences and operated independently. The proof collector and the person who needed half cents for making change were not the same customer.

The Large Date proof is identified by the numeral size and is attributed by major grading services. The distinction from the Small Date is visible on well-preserved coins without magnification, though a reference comparison is helpful for first identification. The Large Date is collected as a separate variety within the 1849 proof category.

Surviving Large Date proofs are rare, with populations estimated in the range of other late proof-only and early circulation-era proofs, a few dozen coins at most. Pricing reflects the combined scarcity and the historical interest of the date as the year circulation production resumed.
