About this coinHistory

The 1849 Small Date Original proof uses a date punch with more compact numerals than the Large Date variety. The digits are shorter and occupy less vertical space. The difference is in the physical punches selected by the engraver; the Mint maintained multiple sets of numeral punches in varying sizes, and the choice for each die was at the engraver's discretion.

The Small Date Original is distinguished from the Small Date Restrike by die characteristics. The Original was struck in or near 1849 using dies prepared for that year. It represents the contemporary proof production, made for the same small collector market that had sustained proof half cent production throughout the 1840s.

Surviving populations are extremely small. The Small Date Original proof is among the rarer varieties of the 1849 half cent proofs, and individual examples are tracked by specialists. Auction appearances are infrequent enough that each one is noteworthy within the half cent collecting community.

The 1849 proofs, in all their variety permutations (Large Date, Small Date Original, Small Date Restrike) represent the denomination at a transitional moment. Circulation production had resumed, but proof production continued as it had during the proof-only years. The two tracks would run in parallel through the final decade of the half cent's existence, each serving its audience, each producing coins that survive today as different artifacts of the same denomination.
