About this coinHistory

The 1850 half cent continued the resumed circulation production with a mintage of 39,812 coins, nearly identical to the 1849 output. The Mint was producing half cents in modest quantities, enough to supply local commercial demand without overwhelming the market. The gold flowing in from California had not yet disrupted the copper coinage economy, though changes were coming.

The 1850 circulation strike is a scarce coin, as the sub-40,000 mintage suggests. Surviving examples are scattered and most show significant wear. A coin in Good to Very Good condition is a typical find; Fine is a respectable grade for this date. The coin circulated in an economy that still needed small copper denominations for everyday transactions: buying a newspaper, paying a toll, making change at a market stall.

The design is Gobrecht's Braided Hair, unchanged from the proof-only years. By 1850, the design had been on the half cent for a decade, though most of those appearances had been on proofs that the general public never saw. The circulation strikes of 1849 and 1850 were, for most Americans, their first encounter with the Braided Hair half cent, a coin that had existed in collector cabinets for nine years before reaching anyone's pocket.

A collector pursuing the late Braided Hair circulation strikes will find the 1850 comparable to the 1849 in scarcity and price. Both are genuinely scarce dates with low mintages and heavy commercial use. Neither is rare enough to be unattainable, but both require more effort than the higher-mintage dates that would follow in the 1850s.
