About this coinHistory

The 1851 half cent marked a dramatic increase in production: 147,672 coins, nearly four times the 1850 output. The Mint was scaling up half cent production to meet growing demand, and the result is the most common Braided Hair circulation strike of the early 1850s. A collector looking for an affordable entry into the late half cent series will find the 1851 among the most accessible dates.

The higher mintage translates directly into better availability across the grade spectrum. While lower-mintage dates like 1849 and 1850 are scarce even in lower grades, the 1851 can be found in Good through Fine without extended searching, and Very Fine examples appear regularly enough that a patient collector will have options to compare. Extremely Fine and Mint State examples are uncommon but not extreme rarities.

The coin was struck during the early Gold Rush years, when California gold was flooding into the economy and the Mint's San Francisco branch was being established. The half cent, as a copper denomination, was largely unaffected by the gold supply expansion (copper prices moved on their own dynamics), but the broader economic growth of the early 1850s created demand for all denominations, including the smallest.

For type collectors or casual acquirers looking for a single Braided Hair half cent, the 1851 is an excellent choice. The design is sharp and well-executed at this point in the series, the mintage provides enough surviving examples to allow quality selection, and the price is moderate. It is the kind of coin that makes a good first purchase in a new collecting area.
