The 1809 half cent introduced a new design by John Reich, a German-born engraver who had arrived at the Philadelphia Mint in 1807. Reich replaced the Draped Bust portrait that had been in use since 1800 with a bolder, more compact image: Liberty facing left, wearing a wide headband inscribed LIBERTY, her hair gathered in a bun at the back. Numismatists call this the "Classic Head" or "Turban Head." The reverse carries a redesigned wreath and retains the HALF CENT denomination.
Reich had been hired as Assistant Engraver to support the aging Robert Scot, whose eyesight and die-cutting ability had declined. The Classic Head design appeared simultaneously on several denominations, including the half cent, large cent, half eagle, and others, giving American coinage its first unified design aesthetic since the Mint's founding. The half cent version is among the smallest canvases Reich worked with, and the design holds up remarkably well at the coin's modest diameter.
The 1809 mintage of 1,154,572 was enormous by half cent standards: more than double the best year of the Draped Bust series and more than three times the output of any Liberty Cap date. The Mint had adequate copper and a new design to produce, and it produced enthusiastically. The result is the most common Classic Head half cent and one of the most affordable entry points in the denomination.
Examples in Good through Fine are readily available, and even Very Fine and Extremely Fine specimens appear at auction regularly. The high mintage means that quality, not availability, is the selection criterion. Look for coins with smooth, even brown surfaces and good strike definition. The Classic Head design, with its central headband and detailed hair, rewards sharpness: a well-struck Fine is a more satisfying coin than a weakly struck Very Fine where the central device is soft.
