The "Circle in 0" variety of the 1809 half cent was created when a larger 0 punch was struck over a smaller 0 in the date. The smaller 0 appears to have come from a punch intended for the Half Eagle, the five-dollar gold coin, which used numerals of a similar but not identical size. The result is a visible ring-within-a-ring effect inside the zero: the outline of the smaller 0 sitting concentrically inside the larger one that replaced it.
The feature is identifiable under standard magnification and appears consistently on all coins from this die, cataloged as Cohen-4. It confirms a moment of cross-denomination punch confusion at the Mint, where tools for different coins were stored together and mix-ups were a practical hazard of production.
Among 1809 half cent varieties, the Circle in 0 is genuinely scarce. PCGS estimates only 300 survivors across all grades, with approximately 20 at Mint State or above and none certified at MS65 or higher. The variety is harder to find in high circulated grades than the 9 Over Inverted 9 and considerably rarer at the top of the condition census. The finest known is a single MS64 Brown. A coin graded AU58 sold for $4,994 at Heritage in 2013.
The Circle in 0 lacks the narrative drama of the inverted 9. A repunched numeral does not tell as vivid a story as a digit entered upside down. But for die variety specialists, the Cohen-4 die marriage is a necessary acquisition. The variety's relative obscurity among general collectors means that specimens occasionally surface without the variety premium they deserve, creating opportunities for the attentive buyer.
