Mintage dropped in 1806 to 356,000, still a respectable figure but less than half the 1804 and 1805 output. The decline reflected fluctuations in copper availability rather than any policy decision about the denomination. The Mint struck half cents when it had the metal to do so and stopped when it didn't. The 1806 date's varieties are organized around the size of the numeral 6 in the date (Large versus Small) and the reverse die characteristics.
The Large 6 Stems variety uses a date punch where the 6 is taller and more open in its loop. The stems on the reverse are the familiar short lines at the wreath base. Cohen's catalog identifies the specific die marriage, and the variety is straightforward to attribute on coins in Fine or better condition where the date numerals are clearly legible.
The 1806 is a middle-of-the-road date in the Draped Bust series: not rare enough to command key-date premiums, not common enough to be taken for granted. A problem-free example in Fine with original surfaces is a solid, unspectacular coin that represents the denomination during its most productive decade. The first years of the nineteenth century were the high point of half cent production before a long stretch of reduced output and eventual discontinuation.
Collectors working through the Draped Bust series will find the 1806 an unremarkable but necessary date. It fills the album without drama and lets the collector allocate time and money toward the genuinely challenging dates: the 1802, the 1808/7, the earlier Liberty Cap issues. Not every coin in a collection needs to be a story. Some just need to be present, honest, and well-preserved.
