Draped Bust Half Cents

When the last Liberty Cap half cents were struck from 1797-dated dies sometime around 1799, the denomination quietly disappeared from production for two years. No half cents carry the dates 1798 or 1799. The gap was not the result of a formal decision to end the series. It was simply a reflection of where the half cent stood in the Mint's priorities: near the bottom. Demand from merchants and the general public was light, copper planchet supplies were unreliable, and the Mint's small staff had more pressing obligations. When the coin returned in 1800, it came back wearing a new design.
