The "Spiked Chin" variety of the 1804 half cent gets its name from a small, sharp protrusion extending from Liberty's chin, visible as a thorn-like spike jutting outward from the jawline. The feature was caused by a defect in the obverse die: a small chip, crack, or foreign material embedded in the die face at the point of Liberty's chin. Every coin struck from that die carries the same spike, consistent in size and position.
Die defects of this kind were common at the early Mint. The dies were made from hardened steel, but the repeated impact of striking thousands of coins eventually took a toll. Small chips and cracks developed as the die fatigued, and unless the defect was severe enough to compromise the coin's design, the die continued in service. The spike on Liberty's chin was cosmetic. Odd-looking, certainly, but not grounds for discarding an expensive die that was otherwise producing usable coins.
The Spiked Chin has become one of the more popular 1804 varieties among collectors, in part because the diagnostic feature is entertaining and easy to identify. Under magnification, the spike is unmistakable: a sharp, triangular projection where the profile of Liberty's jawline should be smooth. On well-preserved coins, it is visible even without a loupe. The visual distinctiveness gives the variety a personality that the more technical Crosslet-versus-Plain-4 distinctions lack, and personality drives collector interest.
Pricing for the Spiked Chin carries a premium over standard 1804 varieties, proportional to the grade and the clarity of the diagnostic feature. A sharply defined spike on a well-preserved coin is worth more than a faint suggestion of the feature on a heavily worn example. The variety appears in the Cohen catalog and is attributed by major grading services, making certified examples the easiest path to a confirmed Spiked Chin for collectors who are not yet confident in their die-variety identification skills.
