About this coinHistory

The 1805 half cent was struck in substantial quantity, 814,464 coins, continuing the productive trend set by the 1804 date. Copper supply remained adequate, and the Mint had settled into a production rhythm that kept the presses busy. The varieties for 1805 are organized around two features: the size of the numeral 5 in the date (Large 5 versus Small 5) and the presence or absence of stems at the base of the reverse wreath.

The Large 5 Stems combination pairs an obverse die where the final digit of the date was punched with a larger, bolder 5 punch with a reverse die showing stem ends beneath the wreath bow. The difference between the Large and Small 5 is visible in the overall height and width of the digit; the Large 5 is noticeably taller and occupies more vertical space in the date. On a well-struck coin in Fine or better condition, the distinction is apparent without magnification. On worn coins, the size difference narrows as the extremities of the digit flatten.

Among the 1805 varieties, the Large 5 Stems is one of the more frequently encountered. The 1805 date's substantial mintage translates into reasonable availability, and a collector pursuing this specific variety should be able to locate one within a few months of active searching. Examples in Good to Fine are the most common, with the grade distribution typical of any early copper coin that saw genuine commercial use.

The 1805 sits in the middle of the Draped Bust series — far enough from the rare early dates to be affordable, but old enough that every surviving example carries more than two centuries of history in its surfaces. A well-chosen 1805 Large 5 Stems in original condition, with honest wear and undisturbed brown surfaces, is a solid foundation coin for a half cent collection.
