About this coinHistory

Mintage for 1831 reached 1,242,700 half dimes at Philadelphia, the third consecutive year of production around the 1.2 million mark. The early Capped Bust half dime production was remarkably consistent. The Mint had its bullion supply, its presses, and its die-making capacity all operating smoothly, and the output reflected it. The coin is common in circulated grades and available without significant difficulty.

The year 1831 saw Nat Turner's rebellion in Virginia, the publication of William Lloyd Garrison's abolitionist newspaper The Liberator, and the publication of Cyrus McCormick's first working reaper. The half dime struck in Philadelphia that year circulated in a country where small change mattered and where a twentieth of a dollar bought something tangible: a postage stamp (when the three-cent stamp was introduced twenty years later), a newspaper, a small apple, or a few matches.

Die varieties exist and are tracked by Logan-McCloskey reference numbers. None dominate the year's collector interest. A problem-free 1831 in Very Fine with even gray toning represents the date well at a moderate price.
