About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 965,000 half dimes in 1832, one of only two years in the entire Capped Bust series with a mintage below 1 million (the other being 1837 at 871,000). The modest decline from the previous three years reflected normal production variation rather than any specific commercial slowdown. The Nullification Crisis dominated national politics as South Carolina challenged federal tariff policy, and President Jackson responded with the Force Bill and the threat of military action. The half dime circulated through the constitutional standoff without commentary, as coins do.

Despite the lower mintage, the 1832 is a common date and available in circulated grades. Twenty-three die varieties are cataloged under the Logan-McCloskey system, making the year one of the more variety-rich in the series. At the top of the market, a PCGS MS68+ (the sole example at that grade) sold for $93,000 at Heritage in August 2022, the highest auction price ever realized for any Capped Bust half dime business strike.
