About this coinHistory

The 1831 proof half dime is part of the continuing sequence of specially struck coins from the early Capped Bust years. Production was minimal: perhaps a dozen or fewer pieces, made at the request of collectors or for presentation purposes. The proofs are distinguished from high-grade circulation strikes by the mirror-like quality of their fields and the extra sharpness of their devices, features that resulted from specially polished dies and additional pressure during striking.

Surviving examples are rare and typically appear in collections that specialize in early American proof silver. The 1831 proof is comparable in rarity to the other years in the 1829-1834 sequence, and collectors building a complete proof Capped Bust half dime set need each year as a separate acquisition.
