About this coinHistory

The 1832 proof half dime is so rare that specialists disagree on whether true proofs exist at all. PCGS has never certified an 1832 as a genuine proof. Walter Breen identified three surviving examples that he classified as proofs, but Logan-McCloskey research has questioned those attributions, suggesting the coins may be exceptionally well-struck circulation pieces with prooflike surfaces rather than true proofs. A coin sold as PR64 by American Numismatic Rarities in March 2004 for $19,550 represents one of the few documented public sales of an 1832 attributed as a proof.

The ambiguity reflects the informal nature of early Mint proof production. Without a formal proof coin program and published mintage figures, the distinction between a proof and a highly polished business strike depends entirely on die-state analysis and surface characteristics. For the 1832 half dime, the evidence is thin enough that even the most careful specialists cannot agree whether the denomination was produced in true proof format at all. A collector pursuing a complete proof Capped Bust half dime set may face a date that simply cannot be acquired with certainty.
