About this coinHistory

The 1796 6 Over 5 overdate half dime was struck from a die originally engraved with the date 1795 and updated by overpunching the final digit with a 6. The Mint had 1795 dies on hand when 1796 production began, and rather than cut new dies from scratch, the engraver reused existing ones with the date modified. Traces of the underlying 5 are visible beneath the 6 on well-preserved examples, creating a doubled impression that specialists can identify under magnification.

Die reuse through overdate modification was a standard economy at the Philadelphia Mint in the 1790s. Cutting a fresh die required hours of skilled labor with hand punches, and the Mint's resources were constantly stretched. Adding a 6 over an existing 5 took minutes. The resulting overdate coins are now prized by variety collectors as physical evidence of the Mint's working methods.

The 1796/5 half dime is a recognized variety in the Red Book and in specialty references. It is scarcer than the standard 1796 and commands a premium, though both the standard date and the overdate are collected as part of the broader 1796 half dime population. The diagnostic is the shape of the 6's lower curve and the traces of the 5 beneath it; certification services provide the attribution on encapsulated examples.
