Draped Bust Half Dimes

Robert Scot designed the Draped Bust half dime, adapting the same portrait he had used across the other silver denominations. The obverse Liberty, facing right with hair loosely tied and a drape of cloth across her bust, was based on a drawing attributed to Gilbert Stuart, supposedly depicting Ann Willing Bingham, a prominent Philadelphia socialite. The attribution has never been confirmed beyond doubt, but it has been repeated so often and for so long that it has acquired the force of settled fact in most references. Scot had been using variations of this portrait since 1795, and by the time it appeared on the half dime it was a proven design that the Mint could produce efficiently, or at least as efficiently as the early Mint produced anything.
