About this coinHistory

The 1800 Libekty variety shows LIBERTY misspelled on the obverse, with what should be an R appearing as a K. The error, similar to the 1796 Likerty variety but produced four years later, resulted from a die engraver's punch error that was either uncaught during die preparation or deemed insufficient to discard the die. The Mint pressed the flawed die into production, and every coin struck from it carries the same misspelling.

Libekty is recognized as a distinct die variety in major references and is collected separately from standard 1800 half dimes. Identification requires examining the word LIBERTY for the altered character. On well-preserved coins, the misshapen letter is visible under standard magnification. On worn examples, the error may be indistinct, and confident attribution often requires certification.

The Libekty variety is the second documented misspelling error in the Draped Bust half dime series, after the 1796 Likerty. Two misspelled LIBERTY inscriptions in a nine-year series is an unusually high rate, and specialists have speculated that the same engraver may have been responsible for both errors. The Mint's engraving staff was small in the 1790s and early 1800s, and individual engravers could leave their imprint across multiple years of production in the form of characteristic style choices and occasional errors like these.
